Short answer

Relationship anarchy proposes that each bond is defined on its own terms, without imposed hierarchy or mandatory labels. It shares consent ethics with polyamory but questions default primary/secondary ranks.

What relationship anarchy is

Inspired by texts such as Andie Nordgren’s manifesto (2006), relationship anarchy (RA) invites people to build connections based on involved people’s needs—not a social script of “official partner” versus everyone else.

It does not require many partners or reject commitment; it requires naming what each relationship is without automatic privileges.

Common principles

  • Care is not a scarce resource to ration by rank.
  • Labels are tools, not cages.
  • Agreements are negotiated bond by bond.
  • Autonomy and honesty travel together.

Vs hierarchical polyamory

Many polyamorous people use explicit hierarchy. RA often rejects hierarchy by default, while still prioritizing time practically. See also ENM and open relationships.

Questions to explore

  1. Which privileges do I grant “just because”?
  2. Can I describe each bond without ranking them?
  3. Do my agreements protect ego or mutual care?

Care

RA is not an excuse to dodge responsibility. For hard feelings, see jealousy and compersion. Terms: glossary.

Questions fréquentes

Does relationship anarchy mean chaos?

No. It means questioning automatic hierarchy and building conscious agreements—often with deep commitment.

Is it the same as polyamory?

They overlap but are not identical. Polyamory describes multiple affectionate bonds; RA is an approach to organizing without imposed ranks.

Must I reject all labels?

No. Many RA people use labels when they help communication.
